Which town is right for you?

Season note: the south coast's best weather runs November to April. May–October is the southwest monsoon — cheaper, greener, but more rain and rougher surf.
Unawatuna
Golden crescent bay, easy swimming
A short tuk from Galle Fort, Unawatuna's shallow, reef-sheltered bay is the friendliest swim on the south coast — good for families and first-time snorkellers. Expect lively beach bars, seafood grills and a wide range of villas from budget rooms to full-service beachfront stays.

Mirissa
Whale watching & palm-fringed nightlife
Mirissa is the south's party-adjacent beach — a long strip of soft sand, coconut palms and clifftop viewpoints (Coconut Tree Hill, Parrot Rock). It's also Sri Lanka's blue-whale capital between December and April, with early-morning boats leaving the harbour. Villas here range from surf hostels to boutique cabanas.

Hiriketiya
Horseshoe bay for surfers & slow travellers
'Hiri' is a tight horseshoe cove near Dikwella with a beginner-friendly beach break on one side and a punchy reef break on the other. It's the south's yoga-and-smoothie-bowl capital — smaller and quieter than Mirissa, with cabanas and villas set back in the coconut groves.
